Introducing the Woodlarking Artwork

Updated: Jul 31

Green hiking t-shirt hanging up in a tree with woodland behind

We recently unveiled some rather wonderful artwork which was designed especially for Woodlarking so I feel it would be good to introduce it properly here.

The drawing shows an old holloway, with ferns and flowers in the undergrowth, and an owl and badger looking on. Roots entwine underfoot, and branches meet overhead. It has that lovely sense of the path drawing you in, but retaining a wildness about the edges ... and after all, woodlarkers love nothing more than being tempted along those green lanes and leaving the outside world behind for a while.

It's the work of artist Rima Staines, and those who already follow her may recognise her style. Rima works in many mediums from oils on wood, watercolours on paper, and ranging through to clock-making, puppetry and storytelling.

Her work has a feeling of being slightly out of time, or from a realm not quite fitting our own. The odd-looking folk who often inhabit her paintings look like they could be from fairy tales we may not yet know. Often, her drawings and paintings have a slight wildness to them, like the bare-footed crone warming her toes by the fire in a winter forest in "Telling Stories to the Trees", or the wonderful "Atching Tan" showing a colourful wagon at a countryside stopping place, and the painting is full of Romani symbols.

Returning to the Woodlarking holloway artwork, one of our intentions from the start was to release the design in a physical way - it's too lovely to just be shown as a logo, or a tiny pic displayed on a phone screen. It's distinctive and noticeable, so pretty perfect as a way of showing you're a woodlarker and also for spotting fellow woodlarkers too.

We settled on the idea of adding the artwork to t-shirts, and took a while to test out various samples (rejecting anything too thin!) and we finally found the right match - after all, these t-shirts need to be suitable for everything from sitting and daydreaming about the woods, through to wearing on a decent hike!

Our short-sleeved tee is supersoft cotton, and a good weight fabric at 180gsm. It's available in dark heather grey or glazed green up to 3XL, and black up to 5XL.

Our long-sleeved tee is a little thicker at 203gsm, so is perfect for summer evenings spent outdoors. It has cuffed sleeves which are long enough to tuck chilly hands into on a cool morning. This is available up to 2XL in heather grey or forest green.

We know the Woodlarking tribe is global so, naturally, everything can be shipped worldwide.

Update:

We've also added a Woodlarking Hedgewitch design in long-, short-, and heavyweight short-sleeved t-shirts, and also some rather wonderful foraging bags in both designs. See for yourself here.

We'd love to see pics of your t-shirt in action. When yours arrives, feel free to tag us in your posts on Instagram and Facebook to share your adventures with fellow woodlarkers.
